Music Assessment
As musicians, it is important for you to be able to determine what good (or bad) music sounds like. What sounds good to one person, may not sound good to another. While musical experience plays a role in how critical we are with the evaluation of a performance, it is important for all musicians of all levels of experience to be able to discern what makes a good or poor musical performance.
Sometimes, when evaluating music, it is difficult to find a starting place to say exactly what is good/not good about what you are listening to. Here are some key terms and definitions to help you:
Intonation
Intonation refers to how "in tune" the music is. It looks at the accuracy of pitch relative to the instrument.
Rhythm
Rhythm refers to how "in time" the music is. It looks at the accuracy of the notes of the piece relative to the beat.
Tone
Tone refers to the quality of sound that a given instrument produces.
Technique
Technique refers to the physical skill the is required to play the instrument.
Musicality
Musicality refers to the actual interpretation of the musing including but not limited to phrasing, dynamics, and general interpretation.
Watch the following video and be prepared to discuss it with the terms listed above. Since this is an evaluation, try to find both positive and items that need improvement. How can we help this person become a better recorder player?
